This little light of mine

One of my favorite Bible songs growing up was the song called “This little light of mine.” I loved the words, the hand motions, all of it. I woke up this morning thinking about the promise of the new year and all that lies ahead, and that song was in my head. I believe that things happen for a reason – there was some reason that song was playing in my mind. So I sat down with my Bible and began to look at scripture that contained the word “light.”
After reading and studying, I think that I know why I’ve been walking around all morning singing about my little light. Jesus said “I am the light of the world. If you follow me, you won’t have to walk in darkness, because you will have the light that leads the way.” John 8:12. Have you ever stumbled around in the dark trying to find something…or just trying to find your way? Its an unnerving feeling. You feel lost, almost out of control. I have felt that way spiritually in my past. Just stumbling along through life…lost and out of control. But we don’t have to live that way. We just have to follow Jesus – he lights the way for us! In the Sermon on the Mount Jesus tells all who were there “You are the light of the world – like a city on a hilltop that cannot be hidden. No one lights a lamp and then puts it under a basket. Instead, a lamp is placed on a stand, where it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your good deeds shine out for all to see, so that everyone will praise your heavenly Father.” Matthew 5:14-16. So, Jesus is the light of the world…and we are the light of the world too! If we live the life he has planned for us, we walk each day in His light, following him, but we also are lights ourselves…lighting the way for the rest of the world! I”ll be perfectly honest, I have never thought of those two verses at the same time…never put them together until this morning. To me it is an honor and a blessing to shine for Jesus to the world. And it is a comfort to know that when I feel like things may be “dark” I can follow Jesus light to find the way. This year, I want to let my light shine for all the world to see. I hope and pray that my deeds may bring someone else to know and love Jesus the way that I do.

Let it shine
Let it shine
Let it shine.

That song is very fitting for you. You have already been a light to so many this past year and you will continue to light up for those around you in 2012. Thanks for being my light.
